Born in Huntington, New York, Mariah Carey’s undeniable talent was encouraged by her mother, who previously worked as a vocal coach and opera singer.

Mariah’s own successful music career truly started once she was introduced to the then-rising pop star Brenda K. Starr in 1988. Accompanying Starr to an exclusive party, she seized the opportunity to give her demo tape to Tommy Mottola, head of Columbia Records. Mottola immediately recognised Mariah’s talent and signed her shortly after listening to her tape.
